He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; Luke 1:32 NASB
King David, who is revered as Israel’s greatest king, is a type of King Jesus. I’m looking at King David’s two entrances into Jerusalem as a foreshadowing of Jesus Christ’s first and second comings.
King David inherited a defeated and divided kingdom at the death of King Saul. Some followed him, but most people followed another king. King David brought about unity and established peace in his kingdom by making and honoring covenants with his people (2 Samuel 3-5). Before King David could establish his seat of power in Jerusalem, he had to take back the stronghold from the enemy (2 Samuel 5). The enemy mocked him saying he would never prevail, yet King David disarmed them and triumphed over them.
Does that not sound like our Jesus at His first coming? King Jesus inherited a defeated and divided kingdom. He came to His own, but His own did not receive Him. Most people followed another king. King Jesus brought us all near by the blood of His covenant. He broke down the dividing wall, making the two into one new man, thus establishing peace (Ephesians 2:11-22). Before King Jesus could establish His rule and authority, He had to take back the stronghold from the enemy. King Jesus disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, triumphing over them at the cross (Colossians 2:15). Amen!
King David’s own son, Absalom, conspired against him. King David and his faithful followers left Jerusalem, weeping. When King David returned to Jerusalem to assume his throne, he pardoned all repentant parties (see 2 Samuel 19), and all rebellions were crushed (2 Samuel 20).
God’s own son, Israel, conspired against King Jesus. King Jesus and His faithful followers left Jerusalem in tears. But King Jesus is coming again to Jerusalem where He will rule and reign forever. All repentant parties will be pardoned. All rebellions against the King of kings and Lord of lords will be crushed. At the name of King Jesus every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that He is Lord of all.
Amen and Amen!!
