Wisdom's Invitation

Come, eat of my food and drink of the wine I mixed. Forsake your folly and live. Proverbs 9:5-6a NASB

In Proverbs, wisdom is personified as a woman. I love that 😊

Wisdom invites all to come to a banquet that she has prepared. She built a large house, she prepared food and mixed wine, and she set the table. All is ready. Then wisdom sent out messengers to invite her guests. She continually calls from the roof tops to all who will listen, “Come!”

Wisdom’s invitation in Proverbs sounds like Jesus’ parable of the wedding feast in Matthew 22. Jesus was comparing the Kingdom of heaven to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son. The banquet was prepared, so the king sent out messengers to invite his guests. But they paid no attention and went their way. The point of the parable is that God invites all the be a part of His Kingdom, but the invitation must be accepted.

Wisdom invites all to come to her banqueting table, too. In order to be wise, the invitation must be accepted. What do the wise feast on? They feast on Jesus, who is the Bread of Life (John 6:35), and they drink the mixed wine of the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18).

Come! Accept Wisdom’s invitation. Be among the wise who continually feast on Jesus and His Word. Allow the wine of the Holy Spirit to be mixed with your spirit. Forsake your folly and live!
