Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the Apostle and High Priest of our confession; Hebrews 3:1 NASB
“Calling” is a word we Christians use to talk about the work that God has for us. The implication is that your “calling” is the place where God has “called” you to spend your limited time and energy preaching the gospel. Maybe it is just my perception, but I always feel a sense of drudgery when “calling” is mentioned.
This Hebrews verse caused me to stop and think about why we use the word “calling.” Why do we not use a more positive word, such as purpose or destiny.
In the context of Hebrews, Christians are described as “partakers of a heavenly calling.” Our “calling” is an invitation from heaven. God has invited us to join Him in heaven (eternal life) through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Our “calling” is an invitation, not to work FOR God, but to partner WITH God.
We are already “partakers of the heavenly calling” because we have accepted God’s invitation to share in the life of heaven. Now, we have the privilege of partnering WITH God to see His Kingdom come, His will be done, on the earth.
Your “calling” is an invitation from God. Will you accept God’s invitation? If so, your “calling” will be your greatest adventure! Hallelujah!
