And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write, “These things says He who is holy, He who is true, He who has the key of David, He who opens and no one shuts, and shuts and no one opens;” Revelation 3:7
What is the key of David? Clearly, it has to do with authority and power because it can open and close doors that no one else can affect. What is the key to being trusted with that kind of authority and power? To find out, we need to look at the life of King David.
God’s decision to promote David to king was based on David’s desire to do God’s will, instead of his own (Acts 13:22). David’s heart of obedience attracted God’s favor and blessing. God trusted David with ultimate authority and power because of his obedience. That is the key of David: obedience.
David’s obedience was not perfect; he made many mistakes. However, when he sinned, David was quick to confess and repent (Ps. 51:4). That is why God called David a man after His own heart.
In Rev. 3:7, Jesus is the One Who has the key of David. Jesus was the only man Who was perfect in obedience. He is the only One worthy to carry the key of David that gives Him ultimate authority and power.
Here is the encouragement for us:
Jesus promises in Revelation that if we are faithful, He will use His authority and power on our behalf. He promises that our enemies will worship at our feet. Jesus also promises that because of our perseverance in the faith, He will keep us from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world. That is good news! Our key to receiving that promised blessing is our obedience.
Father, find me faithful to the very end. Amen!
