The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Psalm 34:18 NIV
Medical science confirms what we knew all along. Yes, a broken heart can make a body sick.
My medical provider sent an email with that question in the subject line. She talked about “Takotsubo cardiomyopathy,” which is an actual heart attack brought on by extreme emotions. She spent 75% of the email convincing me that emotions do have an impact on our health, and she ended with:
“A condition like Takotsubo cardiomyopathy shows us just how connected our minds and bodies are. Emotional events can cause physical health issues, which is why talking about feelings, accessing mental health resources and all other forms of self-care are so essential during difficult times.”
It is no surprise to us in prayer ministry that emotions can make us sick. I recall “C” who was so broken hearted over her divorce that she developed cancer. And “L” who could barely walk from hip dysplasia stemming from bitterness she was holding on to. I’m remembering “B” who had panic attacks and difficulty breathing in confined spaces. These are all actual physical illnesses brought on by emotional wounds.
Is your heart broken? Are you having strong emotions, or are you feeling crushed in spirit? Don’t wait to get physically ill. Seek mental health resources and self-care methods now.
I have good news for you! The Lord God is constantly watching over His children from heaven. He sends angels to encamp around us and protect us. God listens intently to our prayers – the cry of our hearts - and He delivers us! The righteous may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers us from them all (see Psalm 34).
